Restio festuciformis is a dioecious, South African reed that looks like a grass. It grows about 50 cm high with very fine, slightly branched stems that are always in motion with any wind. 
The plant stems are a bright green when young and they turning a golden-green when the flowers are forming. The bracts around the inflorescences are small, golden yellow. There is very little difference between the male and female plants.
