A placodioid lichen is a crustose lichen with a growth form that radiates out from a centre, sometimes peeling up at the ends of the radial arms to have a leafy form, but without a cortex on the underside, like a foliose lichen.
This Placopsis lichen was photographed on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Elevation 1525 m.
