Sula sula is the smallest member of the booby and gannet family of seabirds. They are found widely in the tropics. 
Two red-footed boobies were first sighted in 2016 at the Kermadec Islands 1000 km northeast of New Zealand. The first recorded sighting on New Zealand’s mainland was on the 18th January 2017 by Blair Outhwaite at the Muriwai gannet colony near Auckland.

Sula sula is about 70 cm in length and has a wingspan of up to 1 m. They have distinctive red legs and feet. The bill and throat pouch are coloured pink and blue.
