Weymouthia genus was named in honour of William Anderson Weymouth (1841-1928), Australian amateur bryologists, who made great contributions to the knowledge of the bryophyte flora of Tasmania.
Members of this family are epiphytes e. g. Grow from tree branches.

Weymouthia mollis is quite easy to recognise as it hangs down from branches in long fine strands and are found in the damper areas of the bush. It also grows in Argentina in the Puerto Blest (Nahuel Huapi National Park) and Australia.
