Subphylum: Myriapoda

Family: Lithobiidae
Genus: Lithobius
Species: Lithobius
Common names: Stone centipedes, Brown centipedes.

Most Lithobius species are typical representatives of the family Lithobiidae. Though they are usually brown occasionally one finds beautiful violet individuals (as in the photo), these are freshly moulted Lithobius centipedes, which become reddish-purple when hardened.
They are about 2 to 5 cm long. The adult's body has 15 segments, and accordingly 15 pairs of legs. Like other centipedes, they are more active at night. They feed on insects and other small invertebrates. The eggs are deposited in the soil. The life-span can be over 3 years.
