Helophilus seelandicus (Three-lined hoverfly) is a native hoverfly of New Zealand. The name corresponds to the three black lines behind the fly's head. It is 15 mm in length and its common name corresponds to the three lengthwise, black stripes on the thorax. Just below the scutellum, there are two wide distinctive pale orange stripes on each side of the abdomen, these do not meet.
It is noisy in flight. The Three-lined hoverfly rat-tailed larvae (maggots) live in a liquid containing decaying vegetation, animals or dung.
This fly is an important pollinator of flowers.
