H. macrantha is found wild in subalpine scrub in Nelson, Marlborough and Otago, South Island, New Zealand.
It forms an open, upright evergreen spreading shrub; up to 60 cm high, with a marked tendency to become leggy (lose its lower leaves). The leaves are oval, leathery, bright green and regularly toothed (1.5-2 cm long).
In the early summer, large white flowers (2.5 cm across) form in clusters of three blooms from the upper leaf axils. The flowers are the largest of any genus.
