The genus Laccaria has about 95 species in it, typically they have thick, widely spaced, purple to flesh-coloured gills that are adnate to slightly decurrent in the attachment. The spores are white.
Laccaria glabripes has a cap of 5 - 35mm in diameter, convex at first then flat-topped. The cap is pinkish brown with a dark centre. It stands up to 60mm tall and the stalk is dark reddish brown. They are found in large numbers in mixed podocarp forests. It lives on the forest floor and was photographed July/August in the bush on the streamside Te Henui walkway under a beech tree.
