Rytidosperma petrosum is predominantly a coastal species of stiff, wiry and rather densely tufted grass. It is endemic to the Cook Strait Region, Kapiti, Stephens and D’Urville Islands, South Wellington and Wairarapa Coast to Cape Palliser. It inhabits very exposed, dry, sunny, lichen-encrusted cliff faces. It is threatened at some sites on the South Wellington coastline by weeds and quarrying.
