Petroica macrocephala macrocephala is subspecies of tomtit found in the South Island, Stewart Island and nearby islands including D’Urville, Pickersgill, Resolution, Codfish and South Cape. They are similar to the North Island species with the males being mainly black-and-white, and females mainly brown-and-white. They do get confused with robins which are larger, longer legged and lack the white wingbars.
